NEW: WhatsApp is getting some new features which will make it easier to text

WHATSAPP'S latest update will give you more control over how your messages look, and make it easier to use.

WhatsApp messenger is set to make some useful new changes to the way you text.

The Facebook-owned messenger will roll out a new update that will make adding some effects to your texts much easier.

Currently, it is possible for users to add Bold, Strikethrough and Italic to text but you have to memorise these complicated commands.

• Bold: Embolden words by adding an asterisk before and after them e.g. *hello*

• Italics: To Italicise a word, add an underscore (_) before and after your choice e.g. _hello_

• Strikethrough: Station a tilde (~) before and after the word or phrase you want to strike a line through e.g. ~hello~

However, WhatsApp's incoming update will allow you to make these changes without having to use this time consuming method.

WhatsApp 2.17.148 - which is currently in it's Beta test stage - will integrate these new features into its drop-down menu so users can easily select the font they want.

Currently available only for Android, users can highlight the text they want to change, and select whether they want Bold, Italics, or Strikethrough.

WhatsApp will then automatically add the character prompts into the test for a smoother messaging experience.

This move is the latest in a number of updates WhatsApp has been rolling out to its customers, as the service recently added the ability to send any file in a message.

WhatsApp is one of the best known messaging apps in the world. What are the alternatives?

GroupMe is a group chat app that also supports SMS messages, so you can still chat even if you don't have an internet connection

Soon to be added to the messaging service, WhatsApp’s other new feature will see people being able to send additional file types.

WhatsApp already allows PDF and Word documents to be shared, however the exciting new feature will allow APK files to be sent, allowing you to download an app straight from a message.

While many people are anticipating the update to streamline the service, this may be minimal as WhatsApp is restricting file size to 100MB a pop.

These enhanced capabilities have already been rolled out to selected users for beta testing, with no word of a general release date.

If you think WhatsApp is being too slow to add these features, third party app SendAnyFile is available right now on Android, and claims to already be capable of sending additional file types.
